Can You Get a Visa When You Arrive in Ghana?

Ghana has a visa-on-arrival process, officially connected to the Emergency Entry Visa system. However, it does not generally mean that a traveler can board a flight without a visa and simply request one after landing.

The Ghana Immigration Service states that prior approval is required and that the visitor’s host in Ghana must apply before the traveler departs.

Watch for Temporary Visa Waivers

Ghana has occasionally introduced temporary visa-on-arrival arrangements during major tourism periods. These have specific dates, passport conditions and implementation rules.

A waiver announced for a previous December does not automatically apply in 2026 or 2027.

Wait for a current announcement from the Government of Ghana, Ghana Immigration Service or Ministry of Foreign Affairs before relying on a seasonal waiver.
