Description
The Ankasa Conservation Area, commonly known as Ankasa Forest, is Ghana’s most biologically diverse tropical rainforest and one of West Africa’s best-preserved rainforest ecosystems. Covering approximately 509 km², the protected area comprises the Ankasa Forest Reserve and Nini-Suhien National Park, making it the country’s only protected area within the wet evergreen rainforest belt.
The forest is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, with more than 800 plant species, hundreds of butterfly species, nearly 200 bird species, and numerous mammals including forest elephants, bongos, leopards, chimpanzees, giant pangolins, civets, and nine species of primates. Crystal-clear rivers such as the Ankasa, Nini, and Suhien flow through the forest, creating waterfalls, rapids, and scenic picnic areas. Visitors can enjoy guided rainforest hikes, birdwatching, wildlife spotting, camping, and overnight eco-lodge stays in one of Ghana’s most pristine wilderness destinations.
