Description

Cape Coast Castle is Ghana’s most visited historical monument and one of the world’s most important memorials to the transatlantic slave trade. Originally established as a Swedish timber lodge in 1653, the site was later expanded into a stone fort before coming under British control in 1664, when it was developed into the headquarters of the British Gold Coast.

For more than two centuries, Cape Coast Castle served as a major trading center for gold, timber, and eventually enslaved Africans. Thousands of captives were imprisoned in the castle’s underground dungeons before passing through the infamous Door of No Return to ships bound for the Americas and the Caribbean. Today, the castle stands as a powerful place of remembrance, education, and reconciliation, welcoming visitors from around the world—particularly members of the African diaspora seeking to reconnect with their ancestral history. The castle is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
