Elmina Castle
UNESCO World Heritage Site | Historic Castle | Slave Trade Museum | Heritage Attraction
Description
Elmina Castle, originally known as São Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine), is the oldest European building in Sub-Saharan Africa. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, the castle initially served as a trading post for gold, ivory, and spices before becoming one of the largest and most significant centers of the transatlantic slave trade. Control of the castle later passed to the Dutch in 1637 and subsequently to the British in 1872, each leaving its mark on the structure and its history.
Today, Elmina Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Ghana’s most visited historical landmarks. Guided tours take visitors through the men’s and women’s slave dungeons, the Door of No Return, the governor’s quarters, the chapel, cannons, courtyards, and museum exhibits that document both European colonial expansion and the experiences of the millions of Africans affected by the slave trade. It is a place of remembrance, education, and reflection for visitors from around the world, particularly members of the African diaspora.
