Description
The Kumasi Fort – Ghana Armed Forces Museum is one of the oldest and most historically significant landmarks in Kumasi. The original fort was built around 1820 by Asantehene Osei Bonsu, who sought to replicate the impressive European coastal forts. During the Anglo-Ashanti Wars, the original structure was destroyed by British forces in 1874. Following the British occupation of Kumasi, a new fort was constructed in 1896–1897 on the same site.
Today, the fort houses the Ghana Armed Forces Museum, established in 1953, and is regarded as one of the few military museums in Africa. Its exhibits chronicle Ghana’s military history from the Ashanti Kingdom through the colonial period, both World Wars, and modern United Nations peacekeeping missions. Visitors can explore historic weapons, military uniforms, armored vehicles, artillery, medals, photographs, and exhibits dedicated to the Anglo-Ashanti Wars and Ghana’s role in international peacekeeping.
