Description

Fort Amsterdam is one of Ghana’s oldest and most historically significant coastal forts. Originally built by the English between 1638 and 1645 as Fort Cormantin, it was captured by the Dutch in 1665 and renamed Fort Amsterdam. The fort later became an important trading post for gold and, tragically, the transatlantic slave trade. It is believed to contain one of the earliest purpose-built slave prisons on the Gold Coast. Today, the restored fort forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Forts and Castles of Ghana, offering visitors guided tours, historic architecture, underground dungeons, and panoramic views of the Atlantic coastline.
