Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm
Historic Farm | Agricultural Heritage | Cultural Attraction | Eco Tourism
Description
The Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, also known as the Ecomuseum of Cocoa, is one of Ghana’s most significant agricultural and historical attractions. Established in 1879 by Tetteh Quarshie, the farm marks the birthplace of Ghana’s cocoa industry after Quarshie introduced cocoa seeds from Bioko (formerly Fernando Po), Equatorial Guinea. Today, Ghana is one of the world’s leading cocoa producers, and this modest farm is where that remarkable journey began.
Visitors are guided through the historic plantation, where they can see three original cocoa trees planted by Tetteh Quarshie that still survive today. Guided tours explain the entire cocoa production process—from planting and pollination to harvesting, fermentation, drying, and chocolate production. The farm is managed by the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) and provides a fascinating insight into the crop that has shaped Ghana’s economy for well over a century.
