Description

The Salaga Slave Market is one of Ghana’s most significant heritage sites and a powerful place of remembrance. From the 18th to the late 19th century, Salaga served as the largest inland slave market in present-day Ghana and a major trading center linking the trans-Saharan and transatlantic slave trades. In addition to enslaved people, traders exchanged kola nuts, gold, cowries, textiles, animal hides, and other goods. Today, visitors can explore the restored market grounds, the historic Slave Wells, the Wanka Bayu (traditional bathing place of enslaved people), and other memorial sites that preserve the stories of those who passed through Salaga. Restoration efforts completed in 2024 have further enhanced the site as a place of remembrance, education, and cultural tourism.
