Wildlife Sanctuary | Bird Sanctuary | Ramsar Wetland | Eco Tourism
Description
Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected nature reserve located approximately 23 km northwest of Kumasi. Covering about 13 km², the sanctuary surrounds the Owabi Reservoir, which was created by damming the Owabi River in 1928 to supply water to Kumasi. It is recognized as Ghana’s only inland Ramsar Wetland, making it an internationally important site for wetland conservation. The sanctuary is home to more than 160 bird species, butterflies, Mona monkeys, bushbuck, bush pigs, antelope, and diverse forest vegetation. Its tranquil setting makes it one of the best destinations in Ghana for birdwatching, nature walks, environmental education, and photography.
