Pikworo Slave Camp
Heritage Site | Slave Trade Memorial | Cultural Landmark | Historical Attraction
Description
The Pikworo Slave Camp is one of Ghana’s most important heritage and remembrance sites. Established in 1704, it served as a major inland slave transit camp where captives from present-day Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, and neighboring regions were held before being marched approximately 150 km to the Salaga Slave Market and eventually to the coastal slave castles. Visitors can still see the original punishment rock, lookout points, carved stone bowls used by captives, slave wells, and other physical remnants that tell the story of one of history’s darkest periods.
