Description

Fort William, originally known as Fort Anomabo, is one of the most important British-built forts on Ghana’s coast. Construction began in 1753 and was completed around 1760, making it one of the strongest military fortifications on the Gold Coast. During the 18th century, it became a major center for British trade in gold and enslaved Africans before the abolition of the British slave trade in 1807. In the 1830s, the fort was renamed Fort William in honor of King William IV. Today, it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Forts and Castles of Ghana and offers guided tours through its dungeons, courtyards, cannon platforms, and panoramic ocean viewpoints.
