Fort Metal Cross (Dixcove)
Historic Fort | UNESCO World Heritage Site | Heritage Attraction | Coastal Landmark
Description
Fort Metal Cross, originally known as Fort Dixcove, is one of Ghana’s most significant coastal forts. Built by the Royal African Company in the late 17th century (completed in the 1690s), it served as a major trading post for gold, timber, ivory, and later became an important site during the transatlantic slave trade. The fort was transferred to the Dutch in 1868, renamed Fort Metalen Kruis (Metal Cross), and returned to British control in 1872. Today, it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Forts and Castles of Ghana and offers visitors guided tours, historic dungeons, cannon platforms, and spectacular views over Dixcove’s fishing harbour and the Atlantic Ocean.
