Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum
National Monument | Museum | Heritage Attraction | Memorial Site
Description
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum is one of Ghana’s most important national monuments, dedicated to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President and a leading figure in Africa’s independence movement. Officially opened in 1992 and extensively renovated in 2023, the park occupies the historic site where Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence in 1957.
At the heart of the park is the striking marble Mausoleum, the final resting place of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah. Visitors can also explore a modern museum featuring Nkrumah’s personal belongings, photographs, letters, books, and historical artifacts that chronicle Ghana’s struggle for independence and the rise of Pan-Africanism. Beautiful landscaped gardens, fountains, sculptures, and reflective spaces make it one of Accra’s most visited cultural landmarks.
