Description

Osu Castle, also known as Christiansborg Castle, is one of Ghana’s most historically significant colonial landmarks. Originally built by the Danes in 1661, the castle changed hands several times between the Portuguese, Danes, Akwamu, Portuguese (briefly), and the British before becoming the official seat of government after Ghana’s independence. It served as the Presidential Palace from 1957 until 2013, when government offices moved to Jubilee House.

Perched on the Atlantic coastline in the vibrant Osu district, the castle played major roles in the gold trade, the transatlantic slave trade, colonial administration, and Ghana’s political history. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Forts and Castles of Ghana, making it one of the country’s most important heritage sites. While public access may be restricted during certain periods due to preservation efforts, the castle remains a key landmark for understanding Ghana’s colonial and post-independence history.
