Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary
Wildlife Sanctuary | Eco Tourism | Community Conservation | Safari Experience
Description
The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary is one of Ghana’s most successful community-managed conservation projects. Established in 1999, the sanctuary protects a 40-kilometre stretch of the Black Volta River, home to one of only two remaining wild hippopotamus populations in Ghana. Visitors can glide silently along the river in traditional canoes to observe hippos in their natural habitat while also spotting crocodiles, monkeys, antelope, and more than 250 species of birds. Revenue from tourism directly supports local communities, conservation efforts, education, and sustainable livelihoods, making every visit meaningful.
